چکیده

Land surface processes and their initialization are of crucial importance to address the challenge of seamless (from weather to seasonal) Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). In particular it has been found that soil moisture influences the landatmosphere exchange processes on all relevant time scales. It is therefore expected to be of high interest for NWP applications to assimilate new satellite based soil moisture observations from METOP/ASCAT (Advanced SCATerometer) [4] or from SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) [5].

Incorporation of Passive Microwave Brightness Temperatures in the ECMWF Soil Moisture Analysis

For more than a decade, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has used in-situ observations of 2 m temperature and 2 m relative humidity to operationally constrain the temporal evolution of model soil moisture. These observations are not available everywhere and they are indirectly linked to the state of the surface, so under various circumstances, such as weak radiativ...

The Ecmwf Surface Analysis: Use of Active and Passive Microwave Data for Soil Moisture Analysis

This paper presents the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) soil moisture (SM) analysis system and its recent developments which enables the assimilation of active and passive microwave data. The current operational SM analysis used in the Integrated Forecast System (IFS), is based on an Optimal Interpolation (OI) scheme using proxy observations (2 m air temperature and r...

Sensitivity of satellite microwave and infrared observations to soil moisture at a global scale: 2. Global statistical relationships

[1] In part 1 of this study (Prigent et al., 2004), in situ measurements were used to analyze and describe the sensitivities of satellite measurements (i.e., active and passive microwave observations and surface skin temperature diurnal cycle amplitude) to the soil moisture variations to describe the complex relationships that exist between them. Soil moisture was considered in the first 10-cm ...

Cross-evaluation of modelled and remotely sensed surface soil moisture with in situ data in southwestern France

The SMOSMANIA soil moisture network in Southwestern France is used to evaluate modelled and remotely sensed soil moisture products. The surface soil moisture (SSM) measured in situ at 5 cm permits to evaluate SSM from the SIM operational hydrometeorological model of Météo-France and to perform a cross-evaluation of the normalised SSM estimates derived from coarse-resolution (25 km) active micro...

Evaluation of Early Morning Heating Rate-derived Soil Moisture in Southern Europe

The soil moisture content is of great importance for numerical weather forecasts and has been identified as one of the parameter products of EUMETSAT’s Satellite Application Facility on Land Surface Analysis (Land SAF). Soil moisture strongly affects the surface energy balance and therefore near surface temperature and humidity. Conversely, temperature observations may be used to infer the soil...
